Training methods for the top competitor. Advanced Schutzhund takes a problem-solving approach to Level III work that will help competitors bring their dogs to the highest level. Tracking, obedience and protection are dealt with individually, analyzing specific problems that crop up in each skill and offering step-by-step solutions. The approach uses operant conditioning techniques that steer clear of compulsion methods and build a dog's confidence, courage and problem-solving ability. |

K9 Schutzhund Training: A Manual for Tracking, Obedience and Protection by Resi Gerritson, Ruud Haak, and Resi Gerritson. Resi Gerritsen and Ruud Haak, both Dutch, now live in the vicinity of Vienna where they continue to train dogs for search-and-rescue work and Schutzhund. They also train directors and judges for the selection of avalanche and rescue dogs of both the International Red Cross Federation, and the United Nations (UNDRO). They are international judges for search and rescue dogs for the Federation Cynologique Internationale (FC) and the International Dog Organization (IRO). Ruud Haak is also the editor of the largest Dutch dog magazine, Onze Hond (Our Dog).
K9 Schutzhund Training is divided into three sections, tracking, obedience and protection, designed to guide the reader through the three levels of examinations in each section. Each section begins with exercises appropriate for young dogs, designed to help handlers improve their bonding and communication with their dogs. Then the Schutzhund exercises themselves are broken down into simple steps, allowing handler-dog teams to progress at the their own speed, taking the next step only when they are confident in their skills to that point. |
